State Department Honors the American Legation in Tangier and Celebrates Morocco-U.S. Alliance
The ceremony saw the participation of Ambassador Amrani along with senior officials from the Department of State, including Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources Richard Verma, and the Director of the Fund for the Conservation of U.S. Diplomatic Treasures Abroad, Andrea Cochrane Tracey, alongside the CEO of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Carol Quillen.
In his address to the audience, Mr. Richard Verma emphasized the profound significance of the American Legation in Tangier, highlighting it as a poignant symbol of the enduring ties between the United States and Morocco. The U.S. official also stressed the imperative of preserving this historical treasure, affirming that its inclusion in the endangered sites list will catalyze essential funding for its conservation, ensuring its legacy for future generations of Americans, Moroccans, and global visitors.
Ambassador Amrani echoed, in his turn, sentiments of commitment, reaffirming the Kingdom's unwavering dedication to preserving the emblematic American Legation in Tangier, which he characterized as a testament to the "unique, deep, and historic relationship" between the two nations. He also emphasized the Legation's embodiment of shared values of openness, coexistence, and dialogue, highlighting its singular status as the sole American national historic monument situated abroad.
Moreover, he underscored its role as not only a historical beacon but also a vibrant contributor to Tangier's cultural landscape. The Ambassador also expressed confidence in the Legation's lasting significance, envisioning it as a cornerstone of American cultural diplomacy in Morocco and a steadfast symbol of the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
Supporting this commitment to preservation, Andrea Cochrane Tracey announced a substantial fundraising effort of $10 million dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the American Legation in Tangier. She recalled Morocco's historic role as the first country to recognize American independence in 1777, highlighting the deep-rooted historical ties between the two nations.
Originally gifted by Moroccan Sultan Moulay Slimane to the American government in 1821, the American Legation in Tangier, nestled in the heart of the old Medina, has borne witness to several important events in American, Moroccan, and global history, cementing its status as a cherished symbol of cross-cultural exchange and diplomacy.
