Ambassador Hilale Hands Gavel of Marrakech Conference on Migration to UNSG

The Secretary General of the United Nations (UNSG) Antonio Guterres received, on Wednesday at UN Headquarters, Morocco's permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Omar, Hilale in the presence of Special Representative of the Secretary General for International Migration, Louise Arbour.

On this occasion, the Moroccan diplomat handed to Guterres the official gavel of the Marrakech Conference, which adopted, on 10 December, the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.

"This is the gavel that was used throughout the historic Conference that adopted the Marrakech Compact on Migration," said ambassador Hilale.

He added that this gavel is a pure Moroccan handicraft product, which was made especially for the Marrakech Conference, in order to bring "a traditional touch of our country" to this international meeting.

The diplomat pointed out that Morocco wished to offer this gavel to the Secretary General of the United Nations so that it could be part of the UN archives, as a souvenir of the solemn moment of the adoption of the Marrakech Compact.

Guterres thanked Morocco for this historic gift that will be given to the United Nations Museum, which contains the Organization's historical documents and articles.

He also reiterated his warm congratulations to Morocco for the successful organization of this major event on migration.

Guterres instructed ambassador Hilale to convey his sincere thanks to HM King Mohammed VI for the warm welcome extended to him and the Royal Audience granted to him by the Sovereign during his stay in Morocco.
