Royal Vision to Achieve Vaccine Sovereignty, Appropriate Response to Risks of New Viral Variants
05/07/2021
Fez - The Royal vision of achieving vaccine sovereignty is the appropriate response to the risks of emergence of new viral variants, said Monday in Fez, minister of Health, Khalid Ait Taleb.

"Your Royal vision of achieving vaccine sovereignty is the appropriate response to the risks of emergence of new viral variants, scarcity of vaccines without forgetting the natural risk of emergence of new epidemics," said Ait Taleb during a presentation before HM King Mohammed VI, on the occasion of the launch and signing of agreements relating to the project to fill-finish manufacturing of anti-Covid19 vaccine and other vaccines in Morocco.

"A new national pharmaceutical policy in line with Your Royal vision and in alignment with the Kingdom's New Development Model will have to guarantee all Moroccan citizens equitable access geographically and financially to quality medicines and health products, while supporting the local manufacture of medicines within the framework of Public-Private partnerships," he said.

This vaccine sovereignty is part of a roadmap, with a progressive and accelerated approach, to secure the urgent needs of Covid-19 vaccines in the short term, for the production of vaccines for the national immunization plan in the medium term and build a continental platform for research and development in the long term, he stressed, noting that the goal is to achieve a biological security of the country under the enlightened vision of His Majesty the King.

The minister stressed that under the High Royal Patronage, from March 2020, early partnerships have been concluded to ensure the supply of vaccines, prepare the transfer of technology and start the first vaccine clinical trial in the Kingdom of Morocco. Thanks to the High Orientations of the Sovereign, the management of the pandemic and the immunization campaign have achieved a world-class performance with a final vaccination rate of 34% despite the uncertainty of supplies due to scarcity and low global production, added Ait Taleb.

As early as April 2019, he recalled, His Majesty identified in His Message addressed to the participants of the World Health Day the fundamental conditions for the success of the reform of our health system with a view to achieving drug sovereignty.

"This farsighted vision pushes us to a change of paradigm making the health sector a productive sector, creator of social, technological and economic value open to its international environment," said the minister.

Under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty the King, Morocco has been able to contain the pandemic and mitigate its impact on the population and the economy with a proactive and agile management, he said, affirming that the Sovereign has placed the human and health of citizens at the center of national concerns, by trusting Moroccan scientific skills and encouraging "Made in Morocco" solutions.

"To bridge the global inequity of access to vaccines, +Africa must trust Africans+," the health minister noted, citing the message delivered by His Majesty the King in Abidjan in 2014.

This "strong" message is more than ever relevant today to strengthen "vaccine diplomacy", research, development and pharmaceutical innovation and to promote investment in the field of Health-Tech making the Kingdom a continental hub of first rank, he concluded.
