17th Marrakech International Film Festival Opens

The 17th Marrakesh International Film Festival opened, Friday at the city's Palais des Congres, in the presence of an array of national and foreign TV stars, and headliners from the spheres of culture and art.
The ceremony started with the traditional red carpet rolled out for iconic figures while the public broke into rapturous applause. Among the attending stars were French film director Agnes Varda, US film director and screenwriter James Gray and Egyptian star Yousra.
Moroccan cinema was also very present with celebrities as Asmaa Khamlichi, Said Bey, Aziz Daddas and Abdellah Ferkous.
On this occasion, James Gray said he was glad and proud to return to Morocco, a magical country, for the third time. He also added that being appointed as jury's president is a great honor and that he intends to shoulder this responsibility.
The jury includes Indian actress Ileana d'Cruz, Moroccan filmmaker Tala Hadid, Lebanese filmmaker and visual artist Joana Hadjithomas, American actress Dakota Johnson, British director Lynne Ramsay, German actor Daniel Bruhl, French director Laurent Cantet as well as Mexican director Michel Franco.
The ceremony was also marked by the presentation of the 14 feature films vying in the official competition.
The event will pay tribute notably to Moroccan Jillali Ferhati, Robert de Niro, Robin Wright and Agnes Varda.
During nine days, movie-goers will enjoy a rich and diversified cinematographic programming, held under the theme of the plurality of cultural expressions.
