UK ‘Encouraged’ by Morocco's Human Rights Measures
16/03/2018

The British government said it is 'encouraged' by the measures put in place by Morocco in recent years to "address human rights concerns", including the recent ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

"We are encouraged by the measures put in place by Morocco in recent years to address human rights concerns," British Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, Alistair Burt, said in a reply to a MP.

The British minister mentioned in this regard Morocco’s ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT) as well as the military justice reform under which civilians could no longer stand trials in military courts.

The British minister also said that his country "will continue to support Morocco's human rights efforts."
