Rights Minister Meets with UN Delegation on Torture Prevention
Minister of State for Human Rights Mustapha Ramid met with a delegation of the UN Sub-Committee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, on its first visit to Morocco (Oct. 22-28), over the setting up of a national mechanism to prevent torture in places of detention.

In a statement to the press, on the sidelines of this discussion, Ramid reaffirmed the Moroccan determination to fully cooperate with the UN Human rights agencies.

He noted that the optional protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, ratified by Morocco, insists on creating a national mechanism tasked with policing detainees.

Hans-Jorg Bannwart, who is leading the UN delegation, stated that the goal of this visit is to support and counsel the State party for the setting up of this mechanism, provided for by the said optional protocol within the framework of a bilateral partnership.

Bannwart also underlined that this mechanism is a key element for the protection of inmates against torture.

Morocco adhered, on Nov. 24, 2014, to the optional protocol related to the Convention against Torture..
