In the past years, the fishing industry showed an increased maturity, which now accounts for approximately 45% of agricultural exports. The sector represents 15% of the overall value of exports and 55% of the value of food exports employing more than 200,000 people.

Major fishing ports: Agadir, Tan-Tan, Essaouira, Safi, El-Jadida, Casablanca, Mohammedia, Rabat, Kenitra, Larache, Tangiers, El-Hoceima, Nador, Laayoune, Dakhla.

Halieutis Plan:

Morocco has launched the Halieutis Plan, a blueprint to expand the country's fishing sector, with a set of goals that include adding 20,000 jobs to the industry and increasing fishing exports to 235 million USD, by 2020.

The project unveiled in September 2009, is a very ambitious program with a series of targeted actions to modernize the fishing industry. The plan aims at modernizing various sectors of the Fishing Industry to improve its competitiveness and performance as well as to double the GDP of the activity. The whole sector is hoping that the Halieutis Plan will raise productivity, preserve fish stocks and boost Morocco's competitiveness in international markets.
